Why is it on February 14 that lovers give each other gifts and send romantic text messages? Although there are several versions, according to some sources, the holiday was named after a priest who died a martyr's death during the reign of Claudius II sometime in the 3rd century AD. According to legend, the priest fell in love with the daughter of a jailer and sent her a love letter, which he signed - "your Valentine". A few centuries later (in 496 AD), Pope Gelasius I replaced the celebration of the coming of spring, the so-called Lupercalia, with St. Valentine's Day. As a day for lovers and romantic love, it began to be celebrated from about the 14th century. The first historically documented love cards-poems, now known as valentines, were sent to his wife from prison by a young French duke as early as 1415.
